Fermoy Montessori School was established in 1971. Having worked in the primary school sector, Norma Greehy, the founder of the Fermoy Montessori School recognised the need for pre-school education for younger children to prepare them for the primary school setting. Norma studied Montessori with St. Nicholas College London. Dr. Maria Montessori gave permission to two English ladies, Margaret Homfray and Isobel Child to establish a training college in London. Before opening her doors in 1971, Ms. Homfray and Ms. Child met with Norma Greehy and assisted her in establishing her school. The school opened in October 1971 in the front room of a house on Thomas Street, Fermoy with just five children. The school has been going from strength to strength since then. The school is now situated in Green Hill, Fermoy, attached to Norma’s home and maintaining the home from home environment and individual attention that is the cornerstone of Norma’s vision in 1971
The Montessori Method of Education is a philosophy and rationale for the growing child. Its philosophy recognises the child’s need for freedom in a carefully prepared environment. This environment provides the child with exposure to materials and experiences which allows the development of intelligence as well as physical and social abilities. Fermoy Montessori School provides children with opportunities to express themselves and develop social skills through the medium of play in an inclusive setting. It is our aim to provide a home from home environment for your child. Every child is treated as an individual and is gently guided along all the developmental stages by highly qualified educators. While our pedagogical approach is the Montessori method of education, we follow the Aistear framework and are guided by Siolta.
Fermoy Montessori School (1971) is audited by Tulsa, Department of Education and Science, and Pobal to ensure the highest standards of compliance are adhered to at all times.
Led by Ida Greehy, the highly qualified teachers of Fermoy Montessori School are all graduates of St. Nicholas Montessori College of Ireland. Engaging in continuous professional development ensures that all our educators are abreast of developments in the early year’s sector and have the skill set to cater for the individual needs of the children.
All staff have Garda clearance, completed manual handling courses, food handling courses, Lámh, Special Needs courses and child protection.
For the last 50 years, Fermoy Montessori School has been nourishing and developing the little minds of Fermoy and the surrounding areas. The school is situated in Green Hill, Fermoy, attached to Norma’s home and continues to maintain the home from home environment and individual attention that is the cornerstone of Norma’s vision since 1971. We thank you for the privilege of getting to know your children over the last half century. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the children, parents and teachers who have come through our doors and for embracing our approach to the holistic development of the child and the Montessori Method of Education. Fermoy Montessori School was established in 1971 by Norma Greehy & is currently managed by Norma’s daughter Ida Greehy.
